About Dakota

Born and raised in Douglas County, Dakota grew up the son of local educators - his mother at Central Junior High, his father at the University of Kansas - who instilled in him the importance of hard work, integrity, and community service. After graduating from Lawrence High School, he attended Carleton College and earned a bachelor's in political science. Dakota continued his education at New York University Law School where he received his JD.

Dakota brings over 15 years of legal experience having worked as both a prosecutor and defense attorney. Dakota also has served in multiple Democratic administrations, having worked for Governor Kathleen Sebelius, the Kansas Attorney General's Office, and the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. In 2015, Dakota opened his own law office specializing in criminal defense and administrative law. Starting in 2020, Dakota served as the Baldwin City Municipal Judge for two years before transitioning to become the Baldwin City Attorney. As Baldwin City Attorney he handles all municipal prosecution affording him the unique perspective as a practicing prosecutor and defense attorney.

Dakota and his wife Krystal have been married for over 10 years and are the proud parents of two amazing, strong-willed daughters. Dakota serves on the Friends of the Spencer Museum Board, the Free State Brewery board, was formerly the president of the Douglas County Bar Association, and a few months ago wrapped up six years of board service to the Lawrence Humane Society. When not working or volunteering, Dakota enjoys coaching soccer, cooking with his family, & all things KU sports.
